Dog Photo Air Freshener: How to Pick the Right Picture

The best photo for a dog air freshener is one where you can clearly see the eyes, muzzle and shape of the ears. Start with a sharp original picture, leave space around the head, and choose a crop that keeps your dog's best features in view.

Your camera roll probably contains 400 contenders and several photographs of a blur leaving the room. Here is how to narrow it down.

Start with three photos, then compare the faces

Pick a few favorites before opening the editor. A photo can be a great memory without being the easiest picture to recognize on a small item. Look at each one and ask:

  • Can I see both eyes clearly? For a side profile, is the visible eye sharp?
  • Are the ears and muzzle inside the frame? Leave breathing room around the features you want to keep.
  • Does the expression look like my dog? The sideways look that means “you are late with dinner” might beat a perfectly serious pose.
  • Is the face the first thing I notice? A busy background or another person in front can make the dog harder to pick out.

Use the original camera file when you have it. A screenshot adds another step between the original photo and the image you upload, and may include borders or text you do not want.

If you take a new picture, keep it simple

Get down near your dog's eye level and aim the focus at an eye. Try even natural light, such as a shaded outdoor spot, rather than bright light directly behind the dog. Look for detail in the fur and face before you settle on a shot.

For a dark-coated dog, check that the eyes and muzzle have not disappeared into shadow. For a light-coated dog, make sure the brightest fur still has visible detail. A plain background that looks different from the coat can help you judge the outline.

Take a few pictures while your dog is comfortable and still. If you want more photography help, the American Kennel Club's dog-photo tips cover eye-level framing, focusing on the eye and working with natural light.

Choose the crop for the part you want to keep

The Limited Supervision custom-photo guide explains the three crop choices. For a dog picture, think about them this way:

  • Head only: useful when the expression is the whole point. Choose a picture with the face and ears clearly visible.
  • Background removed: consider this when you want the dog's outline, including more of the body. Make sure every part you want is already in the photo.
  • With background: keep the scene when it matters, such as the dog beside a favorite truck. Check that the dog still stands out within the rectangular picture.

A crop cannot bring back an ear that was outside the original frame. Choose the photo before committing to the crop, rather than trying to rescue a picture that is missing something important.

Two dogs in one photo? Try the small-view test

View the picture small on your phone, without zooming into either face. Can you still tell which dog is which? This is a quick readability check, not a simulation of the finished print.

If one dog becomes a tiny shape in the corner, separate photos may be a better choice. LS custom-photo packs can include different photos. Leave the same-photo option unchecked and complete the photo, scent and crop for each item separately. Checking it repeats the first item's photo, scent and crop throughout the pack.

One last check before uploading

  • Use a photo you own or have permission to use.
  • Check the original for blur, unwanted text and clipped ears.
  • Choose a scent from the custom editor's available menu. It is separate from the original-design fragrance lineup.
  • Review every item before adding it to the cart.
